Dear Diet Tip, I need to
lose more than 30 pounds. I'm on a very sensible diet but I need to
include more exercise to get better results as you suggested in a
previous newsletter. Though, I'm not that crazy about exercising, I like
to walk.
Is it possible to walk away pounds if I walk every
day for 20 minutes? I don't want to waste my time so do you think that a
regular walk will take away these extra pounds.
~~ Joan
Dear Joan,
If you like to walk, then make
walking your preferred exercise routine. Most people make the mistake
of walking too slow. To burn fat, you need to get your
heart rate (beats per minute) in the 50% to 60% zone of it's maximum
rate.
The problem with walking is that most people walk
too slow. To get your heart rate in the proper fat burning zone, you
either need to walk up hill constantly or walk at a very fast pace.
If you're 40 years old, then your BPM (beats per
minute) should be 130. A 30 year old BPM should be around 135 and
a 50 year old BPM should be 125.
We're not trying to discourage you from walking to
melt away pounds but you need to walk at a fast pace for the exercise to be
effective. You should walk for 25 to 35 minutes per day, 5 to 6 times a
week. If you can, purchase a heart rate monitor so you know right
away if your heart rate is in the proper zone to burn fat.
Stick to your diet plan because if you eat too
many calories, you'll never lose
weight. Remember to eat 4 to 5 times per day to keep your energy level
high and reduce your overall calorie intake by 25 percent.
