We get the question all the time - Will a
treadmill help me lose weight? The answer is yes, if you follow a
few simple guidelines.
Keep in your heart rate in the maximum fat
burning zone
Your body will burn the most fat when your heart
range is between 50% to 60% of it's maximum heart rate. The typical
fat burning heart rate for a person who is 40 years of age is 130
beats per minute.
It's important not to train outside of your
maximum fat burning heart rate zone to get the maximum benefit from
your treadmill. To lessen impact on your joints, be sure to purchase
a treadmill that can automatically incline. Adjust the treadmill
with an incline that will allow you to walk at a moderate walking
speed with your heart rate in the fat burning zone.
You will have to walk very fast or run if the
treadmill is set for level with 0˚
incline. Running on the treadmill is very hard on your joints so try
to avoid it.
Also, without a good diet plan, you will not lose
a pound. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you
take in. Reduce calorie consumption by 30% and exercise on your
treadmill 4 to 6 sessions per week.
Always plan your meals so that you don't over-eat.
Without keeping track of the food you eat, it's easy to eat too
much. When you workout on the treadmill, you have a tendency to
over-eat during the day to compensate for the calories burned during
the exercise.
The chart below shows the heart rate for maximum
fat burning based on age:
