Stop Sugar Cravings

Don't get discouraged because you can't control your sugar cravings, there is a way to stop the cycle. Unfortunately, too many people give up on diets because of their sweet tooth. Below are a few ways to deal with the cravings, especially late at night.

  • Herbal tea sweeten with Nutrasweet or honey

The most vulnerable time for sugar cravings tend to be late at night. The desire to grab something sweet can be overwhelming late at night. Instead of resisting the cravings, we tend to give in to the urge, only to feel guilty later. When you get cravings to snack on something sweet, try adding hot water to your favorite herbal tea (raspberry tea is very good) and sweeten with NutraSweet or honey. Even a little bit of sugar is OK. Add 2 tablespoons of milk and stir well. This is a great way to stop the sudden urge to snack on sweets that's so common to impulsive cravings.

  • Substitute low calorie treats

The most common mistake when dealing with sugar cravings is to remove all sugar treats from your diet. This can be a big mistake, because the urge to snack on something sweet will become overwhelming. Instead, substitute a low calorie treat for dessert or mid day snack. Below are a few examples of low calorie snacks that have a good sugar taste:

  • 1 serving of pudding

  • Rice Krispie bar (make yourself or buy at Starbucks)

  • 6 ounce of low fat, sugar free yogurt mixed with 2 tablespoon of whip cream. This treat is only a little more than 100 calories.

  • Cup of sliced strawberries. Add a little whip cream if desired.

  • Sugar free Jell-O

  • low fat or light ice cream (1 scoop)

  • Remove temptation

It's important to remove as much temptation as possible when it comes to snacks. Instead of keeping ice cream in the freezer, go to a place that sells ice cream and buy 1 scoop. Unless your family demands that you keep sugary treats, don't buy them. You can buy the low calorie treats we just discussed but avoid buying cakes, cookies or any other high calorie treats.

If members of your family like to snack on sugar treats, keep them out of sight. Place sugar snacks towards the back of the refrigerator, where they can't be seen.
