I’m a 5’ 9” man who weighs 250 lbs. Though I’m in good health, the doctor told me to lose 60 pounds now! My doctor makes losing weight sound so easy but I’ve always had trouble with weight loss. Should I go on a crash diet? What program do you suggest, I really need your advice.

The best program for losing weight is to increase your exercise and reduce your calorie consumption by 30%. Notice we did not say reduce your food intake but your calorie consumption. Switching to lower fat foods and increasing fiber will help you feel more full and satisfied.

We recommend that a man consume between 1600 and 1900 calories to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week. Since the average man burns around 2500 calories per day and it takes 3500 calories to burn 1 pound of fat, reducing your calorie intake by 25% to 30% will help you comfortably lose weight without feeling deprived.

Don’t skip meals. Most people skip breakfast and lunch when trying to achieve quick weight loss. The secret to consistently losing weight is a reduction in calories, not the drastic change that so many people attempt with a crash diet. By staying between 1600 and 1900 calories per day, you will be able to stick to your diet plan and the weight will come off.
