Dear Diet Tip,
What do you think about a low calorie diet? I
would like to lose 50 pounds or more and I lost a lot of weight on a
900 calorie diet several years ago. The problem was I gained all the
weight back within 3months. I was devastated, and it’s hard for me
to start dieting again. I know that a low calorie diet has helped me
before. Should I again try this type of diet?

Dear Sylvia,
The problem with low calorie
diets and very low calorie diets is it’s very easy to re-gain all
the weight back. When you restrict the amount of calories you eat
(which is necessary to lose weight), the side affect is a lower
metabolism. Unfortunately, any diet lower than 900 calories will
lower your metabolism significantly over time. That’s why you gained
the weight right back.
It’s also difficult to get
all the nutrients necessary in a 900 calorie diet. You need to eat
at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables along with meats, some
dairy products and complex carbs from whole grains. These foods are
necessary for good nutrition and a low calorie diet does not allow
for all the nutrients necessary for good health.
We recommend a
calorie range between 1200 and 1400 calorie per day for most women
and 1500 to 2000 calories per day for men. This is a more
reasonable calorie range that will ensure long-term weight loss and
not just a quick fix. It’s also important to include regular
exercise to counter-act the affects that dieting has on lowering the
metabolism.
