Many of our subscribers ask us about the safety of
liquid diets and our suggestions is to avoid them. Why? Liquid only
diets aren't a quick way to lose weight and will only set you up for
failure.
Liquid diets are very similar to starvation diets. You
may be able to maintain this type of fad diet for a day or maybe even a
week, but you will eventually binge and consume too many calories.
Your body needs essential nutrients that are not
always available in liquid forms such as fiber. You typically consume
500 - 600 calories a day on these types of diets which will place your
body into a starvation mode.
Once you're in starvation mode, your body will
compensate by increasing your appetite to an almost irresistible level.
This is why most people over-eat after a day or two of a liquid diet.
Your metabolism will also decrease to match the significant drop in
calories you are suddenly taking in.
As far as your body is concern, you are trying to
starve it and it's fighting back by increasing your appetite and
lowering it's metabolism. That's why these types of diets should be
avoided at all cost.
You will never learn how to lose weight if you don't
learn how to eat "real" food instead of liquid foods. Each day we must
make decisions on what to eat. By learning how to choose better foods,
you learn how to lose weight and keep it off. In the real world, we eat
real foods and we are tempted with fattening foods each day. Learning
how to avoid fattening foods is how you learn to lose weight.
To lose weight, use a
well balanced diet that is designed around your eating and diet
habits. Diets that undercut your calorie intake by 25% will not cause
your body to go into starvation mode and will allow you to lose weight
