If you enjoy
constipation, lack of energy and hardening of the arteries, then protein
diets are for you. For the rest of us, most protein diets should be
avoided.
High protein diets cause constipation
Diets that are not
nutritionally balanced can be classified as fad diets. Unfortunately,
protein diets tend to emphasize high consumption of meats without a
balance of other important foods, which may cause health problems
such as constipation, weakness, irritability, kidney and liver disease.
Protein diets in the form of poultry are OK but protein diets that
recommend high amounts of fatty meats can be very dangerous. Why?
High protein diets may
cause high cholesterol
High protein diets
that encourage a high consumption of red meats and diary products
may cause high cholesterol due to the high saturated fats contained in
these foods. High protein is not the answer to losing weight but a
healthy, well balanced diet with restrictive calories is the proper way
to lose weight.
High protein diets may
cause high blood pressure
Diets than emphasize one type of foods at
the expense of other healthy foods to lose weight should signal a
warning and high protein diets tend to emphasize high protein and low
carbs.
Carbs are not dangerous but meats high in
fats (common to high protein diets ) can be vary dangerous. High protein
foods rich in saturated fat promote high blood pressure. Anyone who
already has high blood pressure should avoid high protein diets,
especially those that encourage cream sauces, butter, red meats and
other fatty foods.
High protein and low
carb can be a very bad combination
Unfortunately, the worse high protein
diets are those that also emphasize low carbs because many high fiber
foods such as fruits and vegetables get left out of these diets.
Carbs are not the enemy. Complex carbs
foods found in vegetable and fruits contain disease fighting nutrients
and essential vitamins and minerals. They also contain high fiber which
is essential to the elimination process.
Avoid diets that use
high protein shakes without other meals
Avoid protein diets that use shakes or
high protein drinks as the only meal. Even those high protein drinks
that allow 1 small meal each day are dangerous because they leave you
weak and lack proper nutrition found in real foods. Contrary to popular
opinion, these types of diets usually fail.
If you need to lose weight, reduce your
calorie consumption by 25%. Now it's possible to reduce calorie
