Grapefruit Diet Q&A

  Dear Diet Tip,

I read something about using the grapefruit diet to lose weight. The article was in a popular magazine. Is there any truth to this diet? I would like to try it out but I'm not sure how healthy it is. The diet recommends that you eat a grapefruit or 1/2 grapefruit with every meal and the meals are real skimpy.

Dear Amanda,

The idea behind the grapefruit diet is that the juice of grapefruit will burn fat. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to back this up and you can classify the grapefruit diet as just another fad diet plan. Just because the grapefruit diet was mentioned in a popular magazine doesn't justify the validity of the diet.

Eating small meals through the day is a good idea but the grapefruit diet only allows a small amount of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a grapefruit. The chances are good that you will not stick to this diet.

Instead, plan on eating 4 to 5 small meals per day so you keep your energy level up. Keep track of your calories by writing down the foods you will eat for the day.

Forget about fad diets and learn how to eat regular foods along with daily exercise. This is the key to losing weight and keeping it off. It's NOT rocket science.
