Properly preparing your foods makes all the difference in overall calories. You don't have to sacrifice taste to save calories. By replacing oils and creams, you can make your food light, low in calories while maintaining good taste.

Below are a few tips to eating fewer calories whether you are home or at a restaurant.

  • Request light mayonnaise, Bar-B-Q sauce or honey mustard sauce on your sandwiches. These sauces tend to have much less calories and fat.

     

  • Use light or reduce calorie salad dressing.
     

  • Beware of cream sauces, especially Alfredo sauce which typically has 400 calories and 38 grams of fat per half cup serving.
     

  • At restaurant, instead of eating hamburgers, order grilled chicken breast sandwich.
     

  • Use tomato or marinara sauce on spaghetti and other pasta dishes.
     

  • Avoid regular sodas. Drink 8 cups of water per day at a minimum. Substitute diet drinks if you can't go without a soda.
     

  • For meals that you know are high calorie and fat, only eat half and save the other half for the next day. This way you still get to eat your favorite food with out consuming all the calories at one time.
     

  • Bake meats instead of frying. Eat more poultry and reduce eating red meats.
     

  • Stir Fry vegetables and meats. Use a little oil, seasoning  and a hot skillet. Stir frying seals in all the nutrition and gives a great light taste to your meals.
