Selecting Right Diets for High Cholesterol
 

 

If you have high cholesterol, certain diets can lower total cholesterol count if you know what to eat. The best diets for high cholesterol is always low fat. Decreasing "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and increasing "good" cholesterol (HDL) is the goal of efficient diets that are capable of lowering overall cholesterol.

Because high amounts of cholesterol are found in red meats, eggs and cheese, these foods should be used sparingly. Cholesterol is also found in foods with high saturated fats like junk food, cream sauces and desserts.

Trans fat is another contributor of high cholesterol. Trans fats can be found in foods with hydrogenated oils common to butter, margarine and coconut oil popular in microwave popcorn or commercial popcorn from movie theaters. Trans fat tend to solidify in the arteries and is a major cause of heart disease.

Avoid excessive amounts of these foods:

  • Alfredo sauce
  • Other cream sauces or soups
  • Butter or Margarines
  • Fatty red meats
  • eggs (use Egg Beaters instead)
  • Cakes
  • Cookies
  • Chips
  • Candy bars
  • Popcorn at Movie Theaters
  • Microwave popcorn (unless it is a "light" version)

The above foods promote bad cholesterol known as Low Density Lipoprotein or LDL.

The foods that promote good cholesterol or High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) are as follows:

  • Most vegetables - squash, carrots, cabbage, beets, spinach or greens, broccoli, peas
     
  • Grains - Wheat, barley, oats, rice, rye also found in bread, beans and pasta. Eat whole grain foods. Many brand label foods are bleached and over-processed, which strips the fiber out of the foods.
     
  • Soy Products - Soy milk, soybeans, tofu or soy flour
