Diet Supplements - Can You Trust Them?

Dear Editor,

I recently read an article in "Woman's World", pg. 12, about a diet supplement called on L-Carnitine. The author states, "This amino acid is the best fat-burning supplement on the market. It actually shuttles fat into your energy-hungry cells, so they can burn it's stored on your thighs."

I have researched L-Carnitine as diet supplements on the web and also got 2 articles at the local health-food store. It is touted by all I've read to be full of promises for heart health, energy and fat burning supplements. It comes directly from red meat and gives much needed amino acid to muscles, especially if you eat little or no red meat. Supposedly vegetarians get no L-Carnitine because it is only derived from red meat.

I would like your comments on L-Carnitine.

Hi Donna,

Unfortunately, like many diet supplements, L-Carnitine is highly overrated. Lots of liquid supplements use L-Carnitine, but it's no solution to weight loss. Diet and exercise can not be substituted by any weight loss supplements.

L-Carnitine has been claimed to increase duration in athletic performance with a secondary affect of increasing the metabolism. Many bodybuilders use these types of diet supplements to increase their endurance during workouts and therefore increase their muscle mass.

Scientific studies have not substantiated these claims. If you could benefit from L-Carnitine, it would be from performing some type of exercise to the point of failure. Taking these diet supplements with the expectation to burn fat will not work.

There is no evidence that the average person can take this supposed diet supplement and start losing weight.  L-Carnitine ability to increase athletic performance can not be substantiated, let alone it's ability to burn fat in the average person. Of course, the diet industry doesn't mind taking a small glimmer of fact and distorting these and other supplements as a miracle diet cure.

To lose weight, use a well balanced diet that is designed to around your eating and diet habits.
