Cholesterol Diet Q & A

  Dear Diet Tip,

I went to my company health fair for a sample cholesterol test and found my cholesterol level to be dangerously high. I'm really scared. Is there anything I can do to immediately lower my cholesterol?

~~ Christine

Dear Christine,

First, see your doctor. The second thing you can do to lower your cholesterol is to change your diet. You never mentioned your eating habits but if you're like most, you probably aren't eating the right foods to lower your overall cholesterol.

Start by eliminating high fatty foods, especially foods with high saturated fat. Heavy cream, cream sauces, fatty meats and diary products are the prime culprit of high cholesterol. Replace fatty meats with lean meats such as chicken and turkey. It's OK to eat ground beef but select beef with less overall fat.

Soy products have been known to help lower cholesterol. Try eating a serving of soy nuts and tufu each day. You can eat soy in many forms such as soy milk and cheese and the taste is delicious.

Increase your omega-three intake by eating more fish, especially cold water fish such as salmon. You can also take omega-3 tablets but nothing beats the natural source of omega-three found in fish.
