Dear Editor,
I need to know how many calories per
pound it takes to lose 10 pounds. I know that I must stay
on a good diet to lose weight, which is my problem. I
can't stick to a good diet. But I need to know how long it
will take me to lose weight and how many calories per
pound it takes to lose weight.
~~ Wilma
Dear Wilma,
There is approximately 3,500 calories
per pound of fat. In order to lose 10 pounds, you need to
burn extra 35,000 calories. There's little chance that you
will burn 35,000 more calories within a few days.
Because there's 3,500 calories per
pound of fat, you should plan on burning 3,500 to 7,000
calories per week to lose 1 to 2 pounds. The only way to
make this happen is to eat less calories or exercise more
to burn excess calories. Preferably both.
To lose weight at a realistic rate,
most inactive women should stay on a diet that's between
1200 and 1400 calories. The average inactive women of 150
pounds burns 2000 calories per day. To lose 1 to 2 pounds
per week, you should run a calorie deficit of 500 calories
per day. 7 days x 500 calories per day = 3,500 calories or
1 pound of fat. Below is a calorie burn chart for
inactive women to maintain their weight.
