How to Budget Calories

  Dear Diet Tip,

I need to understand how to better budget my calories. I’m trying to stick to 1400 calories but I’m not sure if I’m doing it right.  I’m not always sure of the calories in the foods I eat but I have a general idea of the calorie value. How often should I eat and should I spread my meals out through the day?

Your question is very good. More people should learn how to budget their calories so that they consistently lose weight. Your first point about knowing the calorie value of the foods you eat is very important. We suggest buying a calorie counter book for a few dollars and writing down the foods you will eat along with the calories each day. This way, you have on paper your meal plan along with calories that’s guarantee to keep you at 1400 calories.

Next we suggest that you budget your calories throughout the day like below:

  • 300 calories for breakfast
  • 500 calories for lunch
  • 400 calories for lunch
  • 200 calories between meal snacks

Another good strategy for budgeting your calories is to eat all 1400 calories before 5 pm and eat nothing until the next day.  You basically fast after 5 pm, which is much better than an all day fast. Be sure to include daily exercise like a fast pace walk or stationary bike ride for 30 minutes for even better weight loss result.
